  • 6/3 I don’t want to move into the future and remain halfway in the past. That I needed to retain my hand-writing, because I literally can’t think analytically without it, but was able to move it to a digital tablet – that’s the kind of retaining the past I can accept. I’m having a much harder time with printed books or physical audio. And it is quite possible that I’ve got that wrong. That I must consider myself much more deeply rooted in the past than I’d like.

  • 5/30 AI will never be able to do X, because it can’t do Y, which is how we do X. – We usually have no idea how we do Y, or whether Y is the only way to do X. We also have no idea how AI is doing the A and the B that it is able to do.

  • 5/28 At about 2.40am a truck honks on Broadway, right in the center of a solemn gathering of high-rises with thousands of dark windows. It is an ear-splitting, persistent honk, dragging me up all the way from deep sleep, as my sleep graph will later show. It must have been that for thousands of sleepers. The rest of the night is wrecked, not entirely, but enough to end in a sobering sleep score in the morning and a tough next day.

  • 5/27 It’s been a few days since J’s phone suddenly had a thick, blindingly bright vertical line on its screen. It was the weekend, and we were upstate, so no immediate chance to get it fixed. • 5/26 We may want to have human readers, but we won’t get them. We may not like to be read by AI, but it will always be with us.

  • 5/25 When people write about AI, you can only discern whether they’re for or against it, everything falls in line behind that. No actual thought process. About as boring as if it was written by AI.
