  • 5/10 Telling each other that it feels like we’ve been married for a long time. Depending on which direction you’re facing, it is indeed a long time.

  • 5/9 I sent a document to Sweden, via Fedex, practically overnight. I could watch how it got routed via Paris the next day. But the crew in Gothenburg can’t deliver it. Maybe because of some spelling thing in the address. For several days, they have given me calls early in the morning my time, which I never receive, since I’m asleep, and my ringer is always off. Confused, they talk to my google call screen assistant and mumble I should call Fedex’s 1-800 number to sort things out. I do, and I’m getting directed to Fedex’s website, where I can see the package, but I cannot change anything in its address. Looks like there’s no way I can get this package to be delivered, even though I can see it, and even though I get called about it every day.

  • 5/8 After three and a half years, hung up the first pictures in my apartment.

  • 5/7 I used to think of novels as the sharpest, most far-reaching research instrument ever developed by humans. Today I am bored by most novels.

  • 5/6 The entire world is accessible (and reachable within barely a day), and so is the sum total of human knowledge (in every pocket). Need to remember that there is more time in a day than anyone can use.

  • 5/5 Garbage truck at four. The aggressive humming of the hydraulics and the cracking of the garbage which sounds as if there was exactly one item in it that needed to be cracked at maximum force.

  • 5/4 It is absolutely possible to order magic cards on such an ongoing basis that you’ll have an envelope with a few new ones in the mail every day, carefully wrapped by someone living in a basement in a small town in Utah or Pennsylvania or anywhere else in the country. Four cents for the cards, a dollar twenty-two for the shipping. Every day is a magic day.

  • 5/3 I followed the keynote of my company with intense focus, much like I followed the State of the Union. I don’t do it for the actual content, I want to understand the direction, the vibe, the energy. J couldn’t be bothered with any of it.

  • 5/2 Workday at the Javits Center, stretching my social skills very thin. Met J afterwards in a Lower East Side bar she’d discovered. Luckiest man in the entire city.

  • 5/1 I was about to take the train back to Manhattan tonight, but hell, we’re married, I don’t want to spend nights alone just yet, although that will be a good part of our rhythms again. So we drove here together. Water of the Hudson glassy with some rippled stretches as we exit the parkway.
