June 30. It’s amazing how accurately I can approach my cognitive limit with the metronome. Up to 54 bpm it goes well, at 56 bpm the error rate proliferates. And most of the errors throw me completely off track. I then can’t recognize any note at all, become illiterate for seconds. Only after a kind of reset does it work again. And it’s so hard to admit that I’m playing too fast. That I have to go down two bpm again, because my brain needs these fractions of a second to learn the notes, which simply doesn’t work two bpm above, as much as I try it. With stubborn practice, I advance maybe two bpm each week, but even that doesn’t always happen. Sometimes it just goes back down two bpm for no apparent reason. – I have to take note that I’ve been practicing systematically again for a year and a half now, but I’ve made almost no progress at all in the music I want to play myself. I’m learning on a hunch.
