September 7. The tent forest was now completely empty. There was no other tent, no other caravan to be seen from our place, we were all alone in the forest now. Again the animal that seemed to creep around my hammock. Sometimes I heard the crackling of twigs, as if something were setting foot on them. But what animal would take such steps, heavy as a human, but only one step every few seconds? Later, coyotes howled. A clear question/answer pattern, a yelped, downed interval answered by a rhythmic pulse sequence. J and I met on the way to the washroom, LED lights in hand, when a coyote howled in close proximity. It had to be in the bushes just above our campsite, the repeated call ending in a snarl. J picked up rocks and threw them in its direction. We fled into the car and did not venture out again until it dawned.
