July 1. I’ve been thinking for a long time why I never see light in the residential towers. Especially in the white cubist one just outside my window. Sometimes, if I look very hard, I can briefly see someone in one of the apartments, ten stories up or down. And I think to myself, often the days are so gloomy, the city is engulfed in such heavy rain clouds, that maybe not everyone, but some would turn on the light. On our office floor, neon lights are constantly on in the ceiling, which is intentionally left raw and foamed off with construction foam. But in the residential tower, never. Or maybe I just don’t see it. On a windowsill, a single lamp with a red shade, many floors below me. Otherwise, it’s summer, and it’s never so dark during normal office hours that the absence of lights across the street would really be noted as odd. There are no lights anywhere else in Midtown, either.
