April 9. New bike for my son, a twenty-inch with six gears. Completely unexpected: that the major obstacle would be that his strength was not yet sufficient to turn the gear shift. And in general the coordination to take the grip sleeve firmly between thumb, index finger and the edge of the palm of the hand and to turn it from the wrist, whereby one must already start with an overstretched wrist in order to have a sufficient angle of rotation – all this is not in the least natural. The hand will hurt tomorrow. As a child and as a teenager I was never once able to get moving on a moped because I didn’t know that the lever on my left hand lead to a clutch, let alone what a clutch was and how it worked. Stalled every time.
