June 22. Walked up and down Columbus Avenue a few blocks while the air sprinkled with a rain so delicate that the hyperlocal weather app didn’t notice it, yet it soaked clothes in a matter of minutes.

June 21. An hour of running, an hour of piano, an hour of reading. I don’t get very far with any of these. And satisfaction consists of falling into bed dead tired?
June 20. Thirty hour day. It was the best weekend in Sweden so far. With J, I feel like a more complete person, and we are building a kind of family together. – Gothenburg, where all the cars drive at walking speed and you can barely see the roadway for all the markings, and Manhattan in the evening, a Chevy Suburban, the sun not quite down yet. A Suburban is just about what it takes to make it through the potholes with some degree of integrity.
June 19. Day packed.
June 18. Been to the lake, with clear skies and cold wind. In the water for about ten minutes, then half an hour of fun to get dry and warm again.
June 17. Schiphol more crowded than I have ever experienced this airport. It must be the beginning of summer vacations. Gothenburg: The house for this weekend is so big we could watch two different movies in two different living rooms, and have each meal at a different table. Setting up the new laptops for the kids. They have so many accounts they lose track of them. Splashing rain at midsummer twilight in the evening at ten. Unclear how dark it would be without the heavy rain clouds.
June 16. Sweden tonight. The two of us are flying, the children seem to be looking forward to both of us.
June 15. This June particularly glistening.
The leather envelope for my next eReader, to be delivered in a month, arrived today. I’m running my fingers over it longingly.
In the past I made music, though I was unanimously considered unfit for it. Everything I achieved anyway was a success. Now I want to make music without the bonus of being unmusical.
June 14. Whenever I do something new on the piano – like now the two and a half octaves, two ledger lines above and below – it seems to me as if it were humanly impossible, and only because I know that there are people who can do it, I have hope that I will also be able to do it someday. Yet these steps are tiny. Many people I see on the street can do it, and the utmost human possibilities are light years away from what I am doing right now.
June 13. If only I wouldn’t always be so exhausted. I want to do three times as much.
